LEAD Technologies Inc is a privately held company founded in 1990 with headquarters in Charlotte, North Carolina. It was established to commercialise inventions in the field of digital imaging and compression technology. LEAD maintains strategic relationships with Microsoft, Borland, Intel and Kodak and was a founding member of the Component Vendors Consortium, a trade organisation of the software development tool industry.
Each LEADTOOLS License includes:
- Development license to install software on a development machine to develop an
- Deployment License to copy certain LEAD libraries for distribution to users of the
- Some products allow for free distribution
- Specialty products require runtime licenses
- Prohibition of use in developer oriented products
- Free Tech Support
- Free maintenance releases
All LEADTOOLS SDKs have a developer license component. The developer license component
- Programming seat license for the programmer
- An application license for the development of an end user application
LEADTOOLS is licensed on a per developer per application basis. A good rule of thumb to
remember is "The number of developer licenses that are required is the greater of 1) the
number of programmers using LEADTOOLS or 2) the number of applications that are developed."
For example -
- If there are 6 programmers developing a total of 2 applications, 6 licenses are required
- If there are 2 programmers developing a total of 6 applications, 6 licenses are required
The following products do NOT
have any runtime license requirements - so
you can produce applications with them and distribute to as many end users as you need
without additional payments for these distributions.
- LEADTOOLS eMail
- LEADTOOLS Raster Imaging
- LEADTOOLS Raster Imaging Pro
- LEADTOOLS Vector Imaging Pro
- LEADTOOLS Multimedia LE
- LEADTOOLS Mobile Imaging (basic feature-set)
- LEADTOOLS JPEG 2000 Plug In
The following products DO have runtime license requirements. You will
need to purchase runtime licenses for any users of the end user applications developed with
these products. Each SDK contains 1 runtime license, so you can distribute the application
to no more than 1 end user without purchasing a runtime license (this is for internal
testing purposes of the developed application).
- LEADTOOLS Document Imaging
- LEADTOOLS Document Imaging Suite
- LEADTOOLS ePrint OEM
- LEADTOOLS ePrint Terminal Server
- LEADTOOLS Medical Imaging
- LEADTOOLS Medical Imaging Suite
- LEADTOOLS Multimedia Imaging Pro
- LEADTOOLS Mobile Imaging (advanced feature set – JPEG2000, CMW, 12-16 greyscale
load/save, ScaleToGrey, FavorBlack)
- LEADTOOLS PDF (R/W) Plug In
- LEADTOOLS PDF (Write) Plug In
- LEADTOOLS CMW Plug In
- LEADTOOLS OCR Module
- LEADTOOLS ICR Module
- LEADTOOLS OMR Module
- LEADTOOLS PDF OCR Plug In
- LEADTOOLS Barcode Modules
A “Deployment” includes each copy of the Application Software which is in use, either on
an internal or external basis. Runtime licenses are required whether the software is
commercially distributed or used internally by the same company who purchased the SDK. The
general rule is that if the Application Software is installed on a network or server, a
license is required for any computer that is connected to the network or server.
Runtime Pricing – Multi-module Applications
Customers may have different LEADTOOLS features enabled in an “application” with some
modules being installed on one machine and other modules being installed on other machines.
For example, a Document Management system may be composed of some scan stations where OCR
will be performed, some annotation/mark up stations and several viewing stations. OCR
enabled licenses will need to be purchased for the scan stations, Document Imaging licenses
will need to be purchased for the annotation stations and viewing stations.
If no royalty bearing features are enabled, LEADTOOLS policy is to not require runtime
licenses for such deployments. For example, the system described above might include a
viewer which does not have any Document Imaging features enabled. No runtime license would
be required for the viewers since the viewers are only using the Raster Imaging SDK.
Runtime Licensing for Add Ons
In general, when an add on or plug in requires runtime licenses, and the underlying
toolkit requires runtime licenses, a deployment which has both features enabled will require
both runtime licenses. If the system is configured so that only Raster features are enabled
plus an add on's features are enabled, only the add on runtime licenses are required.
As an example, a customer has Document Imaging and 1D Barcode. A deployment of the
application would require both a Document Imaging license and a Barcode license.
Runtimes can be purchased in bulk for discounted rates. All runtimes are non
version-specific, so if you purchase 100 now and only use 50 by the time the SDK goes to V15
then you can continue using the 50 you have in stock with the new SDK.
Each Licensee is required to enter into a written agreement, covering their royalty
payment and reporting obligations relating to the Application Software, upon completion of
development of the Application Software, and may not use, copy or distribute more than a
single copy of the Application Software until such time as they have entered into a Royalty
Agreement with LEAD. We will talk you through these requirements of this if you have any
Concurrent licensing is available when the products can be accessed by multiple users.
This can often help drive down the cost of licensing products for use in a large
organisation. If multiple users do not use the product at the same time then this is an
important consideration. With this approach, Application Software that is installed on a
network or server requires a license for each computer that has concurrent or simultaneous
access to the Application Software. For example, if a customer has a network with 50
computers that are connected, but only 5 of the computers are permitted to access the
Application Software at the same time, only 5 runtime licenses must be purchased. The cost
of concurrent runtime licenses is 2x the per copy rate.
If customer is selling a client/server license commercially, the customer may combine
licenses for discounting purposes. For example if customer has 5 licensees, to each of whom
customer has granted 10 concurrent licenses to use the Application Software, the customer
could purchase a prepaid block of 50 concurrent licenses.
Server licence Options
For customers developing Application Software to be installed on a server, that will
reside solely on the server, but which may be accessed by multiple users who are using third
party software (software that does not include any of the libraries included in the LEAD
SDK), these customers will have the option of purchasing Server Licenses for each server the
Application Software is installed upon and by purchasing a server license, no additional
licensing will be required for the computers accessing the Application Software residing on
the server. A Server License is never a requirement. Customers always have the option of
selecting licensing based on per copy or concurrent options.
Quantity unlimited licenses are available for single and multi-year license terms. With a
quantity unlimited license, a customer may deploy or distribute an unlimited quantity of
copies of the Application Software and will not be required to purchase or report on a per
user/per copy basis.
Quantity unlimited licenses are based limited to a single customer product family. If
customer has multiple product lines, a license is required for each product line.
